Julio Ferrer
Julio Ferrer is the purest of artists indebted to the Cuban pop art movement. While he does reveal himself as heir to a tradition embodied by Raúl Martínez y Frémez, Ferrer’s differences are apparent in the national recontextualization of the codes of this North American school. First, they are visible in the formal composition, in the purity of colour and the prominence of the line, as well as the compositional frontality and figure-ground relationship. Second, he does not rely on self-defining moments in history or a national spirit to define the native condition. Rather, he seeks out the phenomenal, laid over the surface of a socio-political framework or the day-to-day economic conditions (in Cuba), offering an almost traditional narrative quality, bound by distant reference points that are drawn into the reality that he describes, and a love for the vignette or chronological storytelling in comic style. Third, and perhaps most distinctly, his sarcasm sets him apart— a humour that is far more toxic than a friendly joke or vulgar mockery.

Julio Ferrer es el más puro de los artistas deudores del pop en Cuba. Aunque se le haya expuesto como heredero de una tradición que pasa por Raúl Martínez y Fremez, en la recontextualización nacional de los códigos de la escuela norteamericana, Ferrer exhibe sus diferencias. Primero, en lo formal, tanto por la pureza del color y la capitalidad de la línea como en la frontalidad composicional y el desmarque figura-fondo. Segundo, porque su definición de lo autóctono no persigue las marcas identitarias en la historia o en una esencia de lo nacional, sino en lo fenoménico, en la superficie de un contexto sociopolítico o los actos de lo económico-cotidiano. De ahí su narratividad casi costumbrista, el anclaje de referentes ajenos ya trasvasados a la realidad que describe y su amor por la viñeta o el relato secuencial al estilo comic. También, claro, y tal vez lo tercero, por su humor sarcástico, mucho más corrosivo que el chiste amable o el choteo vulgar.
